Gardens and plants often bring so much life into one’s yard or home. Gardening is also a highly relaxing and rewarding pastime. However, not everyone has the abundance of space to have an elaborate garden. But not having ample space doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in gardening; with a bit of creativity, you can turn a limited space into a beautiful garden.

Whether you want a herb or vegetable garden to compliment your cooking or just a few house plants to spruce up your home, there are many benefits of gardening. Some of these are the following:

Benefits of Gardening

With everything happening in the world, it’s an opportune time to start gardening. It’s a great way to relieve stress. Moreover, fresh vegetables are nourishing, and they taste good, too.  Hobby gardening is an excellent way to save money since you’ll be making fewer trips to the supermarket.

  • Exercise And Nutrition

Depending on the size and location of your garden, it can be quite a work out keeping a garden clean and the plants healthy.

You’ll find you need to water the plants regularly, remove weeds, mulch, and the best part—harvesting. Not only does it make one happy to have a garden, but it also comes with a high sense of achievement. Just imagine feeding the family food you grew yourself.

  • Clean Air

Plants purify the air, increase food production, and increase the general sense of well-being in any space. In addition, beautiful plants also help to appeal to our need for beauty. Besides, with a garden, you’ll have a chance to build your own mini greenhouse.

Tips For Gardening With Limited Space

Here are a few helpful tips to get started in a small space.

  1. Make A Vertical Planter

You’ll need four or five different-sized terra cotta pots or any other pots, potting soil, a wooden rod, and seedlings.

All you have to do is stack the pot plants one on top of another with the rod, put some potting soil in each pot with some seedlings. Water your plants and you’re ready to go. This method works well with flowers and herbs.

  1. Grow Fruit and Vegetables in Buckets

This method needs 20-liter buckets, some rocks, peat moss, potting soil, and compost. It’s simple to put together and doesn’t take up a lot of space. You can grow a variety of vegetables or fruit like lettuce, chard, peppers, beets, carrots, onions, cucumber strawberries, lemons, and cherries.

  1. Use Only A 4ft-by-4ft Space In Your Yard To Garden

Just divide the space into 16 squares and use each square for different seeds. This gardening style is incredibly easy as it grows a variety of plants with easy maintenance. A garden like this will keep you going until you have the landscape you dream of having one day.

  1. Have A Hanging Garden Or A Few Hanging Plants

Hanging plants fit well in balconies. You can have individual hanging plants or a whole garden. With only a few supplies, potting soil, a hanging organizer, herb plants, scissors, and coco liners, you’ll have your garden in no time.

  1. Tire Gardens

Old tires can come in handy when you need gardening space. They can be laid flat with potting soil and different plants in a row if one has some space on the ground outside.  They can also be hung up and the inner lining used to grow herbs, flowers, or small vegetables like spring onions.

  1. Start A Container Garden

Repurposing different kinds of old containers can help you create a great-looking and creative garden. Some of the containers that can be upcycled are tins, plastic tubs, old wine barrels, plastic bottles, gutters and drainpipes, and even old watering cans.

  1. Use Some Wooden Pallets

Using wooden pallets is another variation of the vertical planter; just prop one up, create u-shaped planting pockets, fill with soil and seedlings, and it’s all systems go. Alternatively, you can add other upcycled planters like plastic containers and hang them on your vertical pallets. Remember, if you can’t grow out, grow up.

  1. Companion Planting

This type of planting means you can plant two or more crops in one patch of land. Some plants grow well together; for example, squash and pumpkin or tomatoes and basil. You can mix plants with different growth times or even plants that grow differently. A good example is something that grows quickly, like beets with something that needs more time, like carrots.

  1. Prioritize Your plants

Plant what you can’t get in your local store or market. This way, you prioritize as you are limited by the size of your garden. You may want to choose plants with higher yields. A good choice is lettuce as it produces a lot of food in a shorter time.

  1. Grow Smaller Varieties

It’s quite common to grow smaller variants of some vegetables and fruit. Planting dwarf varieties is perfect for a garden with limited space. Fruit trees like citrus fruits, mangoes, avocadoes, and even bananas are good dwarf varieties.

Final Thoughts

As you get into gardening, you’ll get better and better at it. Remember that fails—oh, and there will be fails—shouldn’t discourage you. You just have to take a step back and think about how you can do things differently for a successful outcome. With a little bit of creativity, you can turn a limited space into a productive garden.

Your garden won’t only feed you, but it will be one of the best ways to contribute to a beautiful and healthy environment.
